Green Jacket Awaits Suitor a PGA Players Prepare for the Masters

2019 The Masters Betting Preview, PGA Golf Odds and Expert Predictions

Spring and golf are synonymous with the first major of the year which is finally upon us as PGA Tour players are bracing for what is continuously the most anticipated event in golf on the calendar. With the PLAYERS already in the books and the PGA Championship set to be staged next month, Masters Week really marks the beginning of the PGA Championship season with a trip at Augusta National in Georgia for the quest for the Green Jacket and the endless storylines that accompany the event when all is said and done.

The uniqueness of the Masters is that the event is played on the same iconic course in which we can relate all of the memories of every holes which are scrutinized for their individuality and historical significance. With 87 players entered in the event, the Masters has the lowest number of players in a field in any tournament this year and with a trickle of players that really have basically no chance of winning such as the elder Masters Winners along with qualifiers and most first-timers, there are around 60 players who have a realistic shot at donning the Green Jacket on Sunday.

Fifteen players will be making their debut at Augusta this week along with the usual luminaries hoping to etch their names in golf lore. Defending Champion Patrick Reed will look to notch back-to-back victories for the first time since a fellow named Tiger Woods accomplished the feat at the turn of the new century. Other than Woods, only two other players have won consecutive Masters and will all due respect to Reed, the fiery Texan is not even in the same league as Sir Nick Faldo and the greatest of them all, Jack Nicklaus.

No wonder Reed is a long shot at +5000 odds, according to Bovada Sportsbook, to repeat as champion. Ulsterman Rory McIlroy, who has been lights out this season winning the PLAYERS while finishing in the Top-10 in his other 7 events in 2019, enters the tournament as the favorite at +700 and is just a Masters’ win away of completing the Grand Slam of Golf. Dustin Johnson is second at +1000 with Englishman Justin Rose +1200, Woods +1400 and Spaniard Jon Rahm +1800 rounding out the Top-5. Of the 10 golfers with the best odds to win the event, only Woods and Jordan Spieth +2200 have donned the Green Jacket on Sunday at Augusta.

The Bottom Line:
While McIlroy is the hottest golfer on the planet right now, that is from tee-to-green mainly but it gets a tad complicated on the putting surface where he has had some inconsistency issues which doesn’t bode well on perhaps the trickiest surfaces in golf. He is a shoe-in for a Top-10 however, a position he notched in the last 5 Masters but his putter will abandon him on the last round. Same goes for Tiger who just isn’t as dominant on the dance floor and his driving accuracy has been suspect at best. Rickie Fowler was runner-up to Reed last year and has 4 To-15 in his last 5 Masters and has been solid from tee-to-green and spot-on with the flatstick. The 30-year old is due for his maiden major. Take Fowler to win the Green Jacket.

The Pick: Rickie Fowler 16/1 (+1600).

Propping up:

  1. Take Rory McIlroy +130 for Top 5 Finish
  2. Take Jason Day -125 over Bryson DeChambeau -105 for Tournament Matchup
  3. Take Justin Rose +500 for Top European
  4. Take Phil Mickelson +300 to Miss the Cut
  5. Take Sergio Garcia +1100 for Top Former Winner
  6. Take Justin Harding +1200 for Top Debutant Player
  7. Take Rickie Fowler +800 for Top American
  8. Take Tiger Woods -130 Under 68.5 for Lowest Completed Round
  9. Take Dustin Johnson -110 for Top 10 Finish
  10. Take Bernhard Langer -125 to Make the Cut
