The World’s Best Golfers Gather in the First Major of the Season

Word has it that the organizers are looking to set the famed par-72 course this week fast and firm in order to help dial back the record-breaking scores that were posted last November when Dustin Johnson carded a -20 for the win.

Johnson (+900) remains the favorite after the world's top ranked golfer ended a long drought to win his second major at last year's event.

Jordan Spieth (+1100) posted his first win in four years, winning the Texas Open last week and that bodes well for the former Masters winner.

Bryson DeChambeau (+1100) is another strong favorite with a string of strong results this year and a long game well suited for this course. He finished fourth in the Players Championship and won the Arnold Palmer Invitational the week prior.

Justin Thomas (+1200) is the third ranked golfer in the world and he edged the field last month winning the Players Championship.

Jon Rahm (+1200) is the second ranked golfer in the world on the strength of seven top-ten results in his last 11 events.

Among the next tier, some golfers to consider based on the recent form and the strengths of their game include Xander Schaffele (+2200), Sung-Jae Im (+4000), Paul Casey (+4000) and Sergio Garcia (+5000).

One golfer to avoid is Rory McIlroy (+1800). He reworked his swing last year and based on recent performances still seems to be ironing things out. This is the one major he has yet to win.

The Prediction: (Paul Casey +4000)
He's still seeking his first major at 43-years-old. But he finished second at last year's PGA Player's Championship and he was the first-round leader at last year's Master's before tailing off. In January he won his 15th victory on the European Tour to return to the top-20 golf rankings and has four top-ten results on the PGA tour since then. Casey has the iron game that plays great at the Masters and if his putting game comes through, he's an excellent pick with great odds to win it all.
